Tracking treats

When we train our dogs to track we use food as a reward.  When we start a puppy with a scent pad we usually start with dry kibble.  When we start moving across the field we want something small and tasty and easy to get down without having to stop and chew.

Some of us slice hotdogs into thin discs and then leave them uncovered in the fridge a few days.  This makes the outside firm but the inside still chewy.

Some of us use Red Barn brand rolled dogfood.  It can be cut into small pieces and stored in a ziplock a freezer.  It comes in three flavors.  Avoid the lamb and rice flavor.  It tends to crumble after it is cut.

Some of us use the VetPet treats from Bil-Jac.  It is very reasonably priced and has good wholesome ingredients.  The treats are a bit large for tracking, though. You may want to settle on the couch with a good t.v. show and cut them all in half the night before heading out to train.

I'm sure that there are many more choices.  Add your comments below if you would like to share what works best for you.
